Scattered Showers

A moment of happiness surfaced upon my face,
As the creases of the desert filled with rain.
I never imagined that it would feel so good to gaze up at the moonless sky,
And for once not have to hide.
Here I can be who I am and not pretend.
Pretend the happiness I presently feel is for you.
I once looked at you and that dimpled smile would appear.
Now the lines have been filled with sand and tears.
I gaze upon you with bleak eyes and wonder why.
Why I feel so attached and yet stand so far back.
We were once so close, faces nearly touching
And yet now we stand with a distance space between us and say nothing.
This invisible box forms around me as we walk in circles.
One foot in the middle and the other is left to dangle.
“Speak,” you say
And nothing is uttered.
There is so much to say and yet silence is all that remains.
