Her head slid down the side of the glass

The coolness of nature firmly pressed into the back of her neck

She lay perplexed.

Her face pained,

Afraid to release the sounds that caused this tremor.

She gazed out the window,

Watched the cars whizzing down the freshly paved street.

Blow after blow

She strained forward,

Slowing down meticulously.

Air trapped in the back of her throat,

Choking on the words past fathers once spoke.

A burn formed within her chest

Raw flesh and rattled bones,

Clutched at her core.

Earth poured from the sky

The smell of the fresh rain settled around her

One shovel at a time.
