A good antivirus software could detect a threat and save businesses from falling victim to ransomware

Millions of Americans have been affected by Kia’s server data breach, which could cost the company a boat load of money.

Kia experienced a nationwide outage that affected not only its mobile UVO Link apps, but their phone services and internal sites used by dealerships too.

The ransomware hackers have threatened to release sensitive data stolen during the hack if the company doesn’t pay $20 million.  With the funds, the hackers have offered to give the company the keys to the encrypted data, as well as ensure the stolen data isn’t leaked.

Companies that hold personal data are most vulnerable to ransomware attacks. It’s highly recommended they have a top-rated antivirus software like Webroot, which received a perfect score for protection from malware and phishing, according to a review on PCmag.com.

Ways to prevent a security breach

  • Have the latest security patches
  • Subscribe to good antivirus software
  • Have up to date firewalls that include new technology like antivirus scanning

A firewall with advanced security services blocks the links and attachments from making it through your network. It helps alleviate human error. Human error is the number one cause of these types of infections.

Email is the number one way hackers enter the network. Training users on what to look out for is the best weapon in combating hackers.

Things to watch out for

  • Suspicious attachments
  • Phishing emails asking to provide credentials
  • Personal platforms asking for credentials via corporate emails
  • Be aware of the name of your antivirus provider. Viruses often disguise themselves as fake antivirus software.
