If it takes all night

She tried not to cry.

The backs of her eyes filled with pride

Free falling salt mines,

This sorrow chimed.

She was present and absent simultaneously.

A hunger filled a need

A want she could not ignore.

She watched him leave.

The back of his head growing more distant.

The further he went, the harder she squinted.

And with every step

One after another

Her soul shook.

Night after night

She cried out for him

A silent ache she tried to replace.

The lake began to refill.

She treaded to the middle,

Her arms outstretched

She pleaded for god’s mercy.
