
She told herself that this could never happen to her. She didn’t wear clothes that showed too much skin or flirt with strange men. All she had to do was say no, but the words were trapped between her lips. Why couldn’t she stop him?
According to the Rape Crisis Center of Medina and Summit counties, every 2 minutes someone is the U.S is sexually assaulted. 1 of every 4 women in this country have been the victims of a sexual assault at some point in their lives and roughly 10 percent of all victims are males. Many of these victims don’t report their attackers for several reasons which often include fear of retaliation.
All completed rapes, 39 percent of attempted rapes and 17 percent of sexual assaults against females result in injured victims, states RCCMS. The injuries vary from bruises, broken bones, chipped teeth,mental health and economic loss. Survivors are 26 times more likely to abuse drugs, six times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and four times more likely to contemplate suicide.
According to the rape, abuse and incest national network or better known as RAINN, there are many services available to victims, such as the National Sexual Assault hotline, national sexual violence resource center, national organization for victim assistance and many more.
