Spare the poor, tax the rich

In the Sept. 28 Sacramento Bee’s “Tech crowd backs Obama’s tax plan,” David Siders writes about President Obama’s speech to the Northern California city of Mountain View, Mountain View Computer History Museum, in regards to his plan to raise taxes for the wealthy Americans.

According to the article, Obama strives to make his $447 billion jobs bill and $1.5 trillion in proposed tax increases, and a renewed bid to let Bush-era tax cuts expire for couples earning more than $250,000 a year.

Many college students complain about not having enough money for school, myself included. We pay our taxes each year and are lucky to even get something back. The last thing that we need to worry about is tax increases. It appears as though taxes are constantly being raised and it’s never the taxes of the rich.

I agree with Obama when he said the rich have “room to spare,” and like many Americans not all of us have that luxury. Many of us have one, maybe two vehicles that are a ’90s or ’80s model that get us to point A and B. Many of us don’t live in a $1.5 million dollar home with a tennis court on the premises or even a servant to clean up after us.

So yes, the rich can fork over some of their funds to help this country get out of the recession we are in. We need to focus on helping each other out before focusing on helping others outside of this country. There are people right here in California that need our help. There are hundred and thousands of homeless people all over this country that can be spared a couple of bucks, so let’s get these people off the streets.

According to Siders, Obama said,  “social security and Medicare, together, have lifted entire generations of seniors out of poverty. Our most important social safety net, and they have to be preserved,” and i think that is amazing. Our elders have worked all of their lives and provided for us, it is our time to take care of them by making sure that they are comfortable.
